Offshore Diver’s Magazine
Got an idea for something you want to write about? Go with it. But first, please email your idea and we’ll let you know if it’ll do for the magazine. Save you from duplicating someone else’s work, maybe. ODM steadily receives email from readers saying what they would like to see in the magazine. Most of the ideas are great and we run with them, but there are too many for this little magazine to pursue all. If you want to write but are short of ideas, see the list of reader requests at right.

Length – Keep it to between 500 and 2000 words, please. If you have to go longer, that’s fine; but give us a heads up so we can allocate however many pages it looks like you’re going to need.

Images – Pictures, charts, etc… are welcome. Electronic submissions only. Please do not send compressed files. We can work with any file type or size, although bigger is always better as regards printed appearance. Unlike most magazines, ODM is printed on a 300dpi digital press. Costs more, but it’s worth it. Unfortunately this means that if your photo is 300 pixels wide, it will be about the size of a postage stamp when you see it in print. If the only photos you have for your article are small enough that you think they might be too small, send them anyway and we’ll see what we can do for you.

Deadline – Issue deadlines are posted on the ODM home page (the page you were at before this one). Generally speaking, the magazine comes out every two months for six issues per year. At least that’s the plan. Life and work do intervene. If you just got an issue and have decided to write something for the next, you have about six weeks to get it into final form. But check the ODM home page or email us to find out just how long you have.

Payment – 10 cents per published word for original writing. Usually works out to about $100 a page. Commercially oriented articles which are worth publishing but which we all know are really just long and wordy advertisements for you pay 5 cents per published word. Articles already printed elsewhere but which are worth publishing again and for which you have the right to submit to us are appreciated, but pay nothing. Writer’s checks for each issue are mailed after that issue is in the mail. If you want some extra copies for impressing dive groupies, just ask.

Milwaukee Magazine
Writer’s Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in Milwaukee Magazine. Here are some guidelines that will help you in submitting material:

WHO WE ARE

1. Milwaukee Magazine is a monthly magazine covering the people, issues and places of Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. Total circulation is about 40,000; total readership (according to the respected Media Audit) is more than 220,000.
2. Get to know our publication by reading it. Some stories are archived on our Web site. Sample copies of the magazine may be bought on newsstands throughout the area ($3) or requested by mail ($6). One-year subscriptions are $19.

WHAT WE WANT

1. We are interested in timely stories about current issues, local personalities, area business, sports, healthcare, education, politics, arts and culture, architecture and urban life, history, food, shopping, music and nightlife, recreation and the environment. We are particularly looking for writers who can deliver brightly written, well-researched service articles but are also interested in investigative stories from qualified reporters. Full-length feature stories run 2,500-5,000 words; if your query leads to an assignment, we’ll specify what length we’re looking for. We pay $700-$2,000.
2. We are also in the market for two-page “breaker” stories, which are often short on copy (less than 1,500 words) and long on visuals.
3. Stories for our front-of-book Insider section range from exposés to amusing slices of local life to interesting people profiles. We’re looking for stories you won’t find in other local publications and unconventional angles on the current scene. Freelance writers often begin their association with Milwaukee Magazine here. These stories usually run no more than 650 words and pay $50-$225. Query Assistant Editor Evan Solochek. Mini-reviews for our Reviews page are assigned by Senior Editor Ann Christenson. Mini-reviews run no longer than 125 words and pay $50.

WHAT WE DON’T WANT

1. We focus very closely on Milwaukee and the surrounding area. We are simply not in the market for articles that are not about the people, places and issues of our region. Nor are we much interested in stories about former Milwaukeeans or national subjects that touch our region only tangentially.
2. We are not in the market for fiction, personal reminiscences or poetry.
3. Many of our columns are written by regular contributors, but occasionally we publish freelance submissions…

Writer/Blogger Needed to Write about Home & Living (Denver Area)

Do you LOVE the everything that is Home and Living?

Do you live in AURORA-CAPITOL HILL-DOWNTOWN DENVER-LAKEWOOD-LONGMONT-THORNTON?
Become a writer for Examiner.com

Are you someone who is passionate and excited about anything and everything that has to do with Home and Living? Can you see yourself providing useful and interesting information surrounding this topic locally in AURORA or CAPITOL HILL or DOWNTOWN DENVER or LAKEWOOD-LONGMONT or THORNTON? If so, then the team at Examiner.com would like to speak with you. This is your chance to become the voice of your community and show off your expertise as a writer for Examiner.com.
Examiner.com is rapidly becoming the online destination for local information, helpful resources and events in 60 major markets across the country. Examiner.com offers unique content that is contributed by passionate people like you, known as Examiners. Writers at heart, they use words and pictures to inspire and inform, to open dialogues, and to help people tackle everyday challenges.
Informed, reliable, helpful, entertaining, and authentic, Examiners are everyday people from a variety of backgrounds and professions. They are college students, civil servants, and retirees, PhDs, musicians, magazine editors and stay-at-home parents. Examiners are your helpful neighbors and local leaders. They are credible resources — the “go to” experts — for local information, helpful resources and events. Most Examiners have full-time or part-time jobs, or are full-or-part time students.

This is not a full-time job. Examiners are independent contractors. This allows them to choose what to write about and when. They write from home, school, or wherever they want. They publish a minimum of four articles per week. Examiner.com does not expect lengthy articles. Frequent, brief posts bring people back and lead to increased page views – an important key to success!

Examiners are paid a very competitive rate based on standard Internet variables including page views, unique visitors, session length and advertising performance. And with the exclusive Examiner tools we provide, you’ll have daily access to see your accrued earnings, so you’ll always know where you stand and how your efforts are affecting your earnings. We’re not offering a full-time “quit your day-job” kind of opportunity, but you can definitely earn a little extra cash from Examiner.com.
Examiner.com provides the training and tools you need to publish and promote your articles. The more familiar you are with Web-based publishing (things like HTML, and uploading photos and video), the faster it should go.

As an Examiner you will have a great opportunity to inform others about a subject you love and to promote yourself and, we hope, further your career.

If the idea of becoming an Examiner excites you, please go to http://www.examiner.com/about_examiner/?cid=fdp-denhomliv — and learn more about becoming an Examiner.

Get paid to work Facebook? YES! (really)

If you enjoy working with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media sites, we have a job for you: get paid to work with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media sites. It’s kind of like sitting at home in your pajamas, working the internets, except at our office, and not in pajamas. This job isn’t for everyone (and it may not be for you). We are looking for people who don’t like being bugged by pointy-hair managers, hate being manipulated by weasels, despise being micromanaged and simply want to have fun and get the job done.

Required Skills: Social networking. Lots of it. Good judgment. Ability to learn. Strong work ethic. Punctual. Can fill out timesheet and simple paperwork (accurately, every time)
Required Education: They don’t teach social networks in school yet. Being able to write is critical, and so is a little understanding of marketing and advertising.
Pay: More than burger flipper and less than starting NFL quarterback. Probably not anywhere near the starting NFL quarterback. But definitely more than the burger flipper.
Work From Our office that is located inside an actual, genuine ISP data center. We hate slow Internet. Your cable modem is slow.

How to Apply: SEND US A LINK TO YOUR PROFILE AND SEND YOUR CONTACT INFO. If we like it, then we’ll ask for fancy stuff like resumes and cover letters. If we like that, then we’ll invite you in for a chat. Oh, send to jobs@problogservice.com.

(Yes, we know you probably don’t want to show us that MySpace page. It’s ok. That’s probably a plus for this one because we are looking to hire people who know MySpace).
